Wednesday will see a few bands of moisture move, from a low-pressure off sore moving south. This is NOT a significant snowfall pattern for the NW. We may see a trace to a couple of inches of snow, with a snow level of 3000 ft which is respectable, especially considering the warmth on Monday and Tuesday. Snowpack is near to above normal, so the recent warmth and upcoming dry spell coming wont hurt us.

As the low moves south and hammers Lake Tahoe with 2-4 ft of snow (Wed Saturday) the NW will be left high and dry. Expect seasonable temperatures and partly sunny skies for Thursday through the weekend with a return to spring skiing with great groomers and variable off piste conditions. There may be a few wrap around snow showers, as the low is south of us and the counter clockwise circulation, spins moisture toward the Pacific NW. Again not a major snow pattern, more likely partly sunny, with few clouds

The snowfall is not over for the season, as can get fantastic conditions in late March and April but the weather maps indicate the possibility of an extended dry period.

Niko Suokko Memorial Fund
A memorial fund to save young lives in the backcountry

The last two weeks of February heavy snow fell in the mountains up and down the West Coast. Sadly, we had many snow related fatalities with this storm cycle. There were avalanches, tree wells and traffic accidents. And not only skiers, but snow shoe hikers and snowmobilers. We wish to express our deepest condolences to all the families and friends.

One fatality was a family friend. Niko Suokko, an 18 year old, was with a friend and both were hit and killed by an avalanche, near Snoqualmie pass in the backcountry. Niko was well trained and experienced, with level one avalanche training. He had all the recommended avalanche safety gear. Our thoughts go out to the family and friends, who are heartbroken.

A memorial fund has been established to invest in new-targeted programs creating more awareness and training for young people all designed specifically for the youth audience. I hope you consider supporting the Northwest Avalanche Center (NWAC) and the memorial fund to save young lives in the backcountry. I have made a donation.

I thank you for your support, in remembering Niko and keeping our youth safe in the backcountry.
