Dec 24- Baker Wins and Webcams Rule

Hello Skiers and Snowboarders,

Short-Term Forecast

On Christmas Day, expect light snow during the day. Later on Friday, a cold front will move in with snow, mainly for the late afternoon and evening. Much of the area will get 2 to 4"; see map 1 below. However, if a Puget Sound Convergence Zone forms late Friday, then the Snoqualmie Pass area could have higher totals.

Light snow for early Saturday morning, with some sun breaks possible for the afternoon. Saturday would be a great day to get out to enjoy the snow from late Friday.

FYI: Wind. Christmas Eve day will bring some strong winds, but we expect lighter winds on Christmas Day. Make sure you check resort updates.

Snow and Weather Summary

  • Strongest winds will be today from noon until 5pm.

  • Thursday: Up to 2"

  • Friday: 2 to 4" higher at Mt. Baker and Silver Mt

  • Saturday: Up to 1"

Extended Outlook:

Sunday, Dec. 28 to Wednesday, Dec. 31

For much of this period, there will be an upper-level ridge of high pressure (see map 2) that will be in place over our region. Thus, we can expect dry conditions with some sunbreaks.

Our next update will be Sunday, December 28.

Slopes - Elevation General Guidelines

  • Lower Slopes - Under 4000'

  • Mid-Slopes - 4000 to 5500'

  • Upper-Slopes - Above 5500'

Mt Baker has received most snow for our areas. They're reporting wind issues. "We’re currently sitting on the deepest snow base in Washington and Oregon which means that patrol has been able to open up almost all of our terrain. With the deep base the snow cat crew has been widening out the groomed runs and the Shuksan side is styled out for those of you who prefer cruising the corduroy over riding off the trails."

Resorts across the US and Canada- Any snow coming?

If you have some extended vacation time, here is a list of ski resorts, including snow coverage and operational status.

Many of you are asking about the extended outlook outside of Washington or any possibility of new snow for the western parts.

One location that seems to be getting multiple days of snowstorms is in the Sierra. The map below reflects snow totals just for one storm. In fact, several forecast models indicate that the South Lake Tahoe area (6200’) will be getting up to 40” (cumulative) for the period Wednesday, December 24, through Friday, December 26. Then dry and cool for Saturday, December 27, and Sunday, December 28.
