Jan 22- So dry

Hello Skiers and Snowboarders,

Short-Term Forecast

Friday through Sunday, we will continue with the mostly dry January, probably not the dry January most of us envision. One of the main culprits of this dry pattern is the upper high ridge (18,000'), which has been anchored over the West Coast.

DAILY DOSE OF DAYDREAM: Near Myoko, Japan. Jan 21 from subscriber Zack Hamilton. Skier: Makayla of Salt Lake City. Locals say it's an average December. January doing fine. Big snow recently.

This ridge blocks any wet weather systems from our region. One reason this ridge is still anchored over the West Coast is the cold pool of dense air over the Central U.S.

Areas of high pressure or low pressure tend to move from west to east in our latitude. However, that large pool of dense, cold air in the Central U.S. is partly blocking this movement.

We will continue to see a similar pattern to the one we have had over the last several weeks. Cold start to the day with some low clouds in the morning, especially at the lower to mid slopes of Stevens Pass and Snoqualmie Pass. Resorts like Baker and Crystal have much less cloud than at the aforementioned passes. Eastern Washington tends to have clouds trapped generally at the lower and mid-slopes.

Think snow. The extended outlook gives us some optimism.

Snow and Weather Summary

  • Friday: Dry!

  • Saturday: No changes are expected

  • Sunday: Continued dry

Extended Outlook: Mon. Jan 25 to Wed. Jan. 28

Monday and Tuesday will continue with the dry pattern.

Sunday forecasts (usually) will go out in the afternoons during January and February while I’m on snow teaching the next generation of skiers.

However... Alpental lessons are cancelled for Saturday and Sunday, so I'm not teaching (insert sad face). The kids will have a make-up session in March (I love spring skiing).

Thanks for reading.
