This winter, the Pacific Northwest has had its share (some estimates are 5+) of these. You know the results: high snow levels, heavy rain on most slopes, and passes might get closed due to slides.
Previously, these events were called Pineapple Express, which originated near Hawaii. In fact, some meteorologists in California used to call these Hawaiian Storms, pre 1980. Now, a Pineapple Express is a type of Atmospheric River (AR).
In the mid 1990s, two climate scientists from MIT did some extensive research and wrote a technical paper on ARs. They analyzed 40 to 70 years of climate data and found that many U.S. West Coast areas receive 30 to 60% of their annual precipitation from ARs. On the more technical side, they measured the Integrated Water Vapor Transport (IVT) and Integrated Water Vapor (IWV) to determine the strength. NOAA has a site where you can track this.
